Everyone's skin is different, so generalized advice should generally be taken as theory, not gospel. Some people have great luck slathering on coconut oil and vaseline, and some of us look like we walked through a beehive when we try it. @christxiee on TikTok

Bit of clarification on number 3: I feel like it can be true with many poorly-made products, since they are not formulated to be compatible with the skin's natural pH and biome; however, active ingredients often cause a mild tingle, which should go away after a few minutes. If it does not, there are two possibilities: your skin is very distressed and needs time to heal, or you are allergic, in which case, you should remove the product, and try something else. Keep in mind, tingling is normal for some skin types, while others may not experience it as much. Anything lasting more than a few minutes, unless you know your skin to react this way, should be assumed to be an allergic reaction.

Rice Ferment Pt. 2 (How-To)

You want better hair and skin, basically free?  Fermented rice water Extra is one of my favorites!  What’s more, you can eat the leftovers!  1:1 Rice to Water is usually recommended, but I think much less is good!  I recommend about 1 part rice, 3 parts water, as you don’t want to oversaturate your hair.  That’s why it’s best to use a blend of different ingredients, like in my affordable Mane Maker serum, as the rich nutrition can cause split ends if overused.  HongYao women add other ingredients, like pomelo peel, fleeceflower root (aka knotweed), and ginger.  I recommend grapefruit, knotweed, green tea, and ginger for this.  Families will sometimes add secret ingredients, experiment!  Heating helps the process some, but can also break down the nutrients you want.  Start with the extras, if you choose to add them.  With a thermometer, heat less than 50C, or 122F.  Mixing or muddling will release the nutrients easier.  Let it mull at least 15 minutes before adding rinsed rice, and once the water’s cool enough, rub the rice with your hands.  Then, all you need to do is let it rest about 12-24 hours, strain, and store in the fridge!  Keep about two weeks, checking for smell or an off look before use every three days.  Like and follow if…

Ingredients: ⅓ Liter Batch

.5 Cups Rice (mix of brown and white rice, *essential*)

1.5 Cups Water (avoid hard water, boil before use if from the tap, *essential*)

1 Grapefruit Peel (highly recommended)

1 Tablespoon Green Tea (highly recommended)

1 Tablespoon Ginger Root (about a 1”x1” chunk, recommended)

1 Tablespoon Fleeceflower Root, AKA Japanese Knotweed (optional; harder to get, more expensive, high in trans-resveratrol, hard to substitute. Will update if I find a cheaper alternative)

I will teach how to make shampoo like the HongYao women use in a later video. I recommend substituting soapberries for that, as they are easier and cheaper to get here in the West than tea bran powder.  The process is somewhat similar, but different enough that it requires its own video; I cannot fit the requisite information into this one-minute short.

Yeast is not necessary for this process at home.

Directions:

  1. (optional) If you have a blender, then putting larger ingredients in there will increase the surface area, allowing more nutrients to be extracted in later steps.  Measure the water in with the other ingredients, and blend before step 2.
  2. Add Grapefruit Peel, Green Tea, Ginger, and Knotweed to distilled, purified, or prepared tap water (will maybe make a video on it, it’s a simple process if you don’t have a filter)
  3. Heat to less than 50 Celsius/122 Fahrenheit.  Target 40 Celsius/104 Fahrenheit.  Maintain temperature for at least 15 minutes, but 30 minutes to an hour is optimal.  Muddle and mix throughout.  If you don’t have a thermometer, simply skip to step 4.
  4. Add Rice (while warm if heating); then rub and mix the rice together forcefully with clean hands or utensils.
  5. Allow the mixture to sit at room temperature 12-24 hours, then strain and store in your fridge.

You can dilute it with water for each use. Just pour some in a cup, and dilute with the same amount of regular tap water.  Apply to hair and scalp vigorously, massaging in as much as possible.  Things like wearing a shower cap to lock in the moisture, stimulating the scalp with a stiff brush, and washing the hair with your head lowered are all anecdotally said to help with the process.  Although there’s little proof for these, they’re free and fun self-care rituals.  I think the shower cap is the best of those, but most likely, the best way to protect hair is to wear it protectively, limiting movement and exposure.  Experiment as you will!  These are techniques which have been used for centuries, to great success.
